Sgt. Oded Kornfein

Apr 5, 2002 - Sgt. Oded Kornfein, 20, of Kibbutz Ha'on was killed in an exchange of fire between IDF troops and Palestinian gunmen in Jenin (Operation Defensive Shield).

Oded was a musician and played drums for several groups. He served in the Nahal Brigade.

Oded's brother Eldad was on reserve duty at the time that Oded was killed. "We saw each other near Ramallah after I was called up," said Eldad. "We hugged and I told him to take care of himself. Then he was whisked away in a helicopter to Jenin." Eldad returned home for the weekend and did not tell his parents that his younger brother was fighting in Jenin.

Oded's parents, David and Varda, moved from Kfar Sava to Kibbutz Ha'on 20 years ago. Nine years ago, their eldest son, Eran, was killed in a motorcycle accident in Thailand at age 24.

Sgt. Oded Kornfein is buried at the cemetery at Kibbutz Ha'on. He is survived by his parents David and Varda, brothers Eldad 25 and Assaf 29, and sister Shira 16.
