Tomer Mordechai

Apr 1, 2002 - Policeman Tomer Mordechai, 19, of Tel-Aviv, was killed in Jerusalem, when a Palestinian suicide bomber driving toward the city center blew himself up after being stopped at a roadblock. The Fatah al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades claimed responsibility for the attack.

Tomer was a volunteer in the Civil Guard. He graduated from Alliance High School in Tel Aviv. When he was drafted into the army in November 2001, he fought to be allowed to complete his compulsory service in the police force.

About two months ago, he entered the police force in the Yarkon District. Still in training, he was sent to reinforce the Jerusalem police when he was mortally wounded at the roadblock.

"Your determination, willingness to sacrifice and courage saved the lives of many Israeli citizens. We resolve to continue in your path - the path of bravery," said the commander of the Yarkon police district at Tomer's funeral.

Tomer was buried at the Kfar Shaul cemetery. He is survived by his parents and sister, Vered.
