Daniel Carlos Wegman
Mar 31, 2002 - Daniel Carlos Wegman, 50, of Haifa was one of 15 people killed in a suicide bombing in Haifa, in the Matza restaurant of the gas station near the Grand Canyon shopping mall. Just after 2:30 PM on Sunday afternoon, during the Passover holiday, the terrorist entered the popular Matza restaurant in the Neve Sha'anan district near the Grand Canyon mall. The explosion tore the roof off the one-story building, and blew out the windows, instantly killing 14 people, and leaving horrific scenes of people on fire, and people with lost limbs. Over 40 people were injured. Wegman immigrated to Israel in 1973 from Argentina. He studied at the Technion in Haifa and ran an office for engineering and construction. Father of two grown daughters, he had planned to be married for the second time this summer to Marie Zlotnik, whom he had known for three years. A friend of his, Gabi Zohar, said, "He was a good soul. Just a couple of days ago we met, eight couples who were good friends. We went out together. Carlos said: 'We can't spend our lives in the home. It's imperative that we go out, to enjoy ourselves and to eat out in restaurants, especially in these times.'" Carlos was dining at Matza with his friend Carlos Yerushalmi, who was also killed in the blast. Daniel Carlos Wegman was buried in Haifa. He is survived by two daughters - Donna (23) and Maya (21). |
