Dov Chernevroda

Mar 31, 2002 - Dov Chernevroda, 67, of Haifa was one of 15 people killed in a suicide bombing in Haifa, in the Matza restaurant of the gas station near the Grand Canyon shopping mall.

Just after 2:30 PM on Sunday afternoon, during the Passover holiday, the terrorist entered the popular Matza restaurant in the Neve Sha'anan district near the Grand Canyon mall. The explosion tore the roof off the one-story building, and blew out the windows, instantly killing 14 people, and leaving horrific scenes of people on fire, and people with lost limbs. Over 40 people were injured.

Architect Dov Chernevroda ate nearly every day at the Matza restaurant, where he met his death.

Dov was born in Tel Aviv, and moved to Kibbutz Misgav Am, where he met his late wife, Ilana. At the end of the 60s the family moved to Kibbutz Beit Oren, and a year later to Haifa. Ilana was an advisor to the mayor of Haifa on the status of women, and a well-known political activist. She died five years ago of cancer.

Dov was very active in left-wing political events, and before the Oslo Accords was instrumental in arranging meetings between Faisal Husseini and well-known Israeli personalities. He was also active in the Mapam and Meretz parties. He was always optimistic about the peace process, said his son Shaul, and worked all his life for peace and co-existence.

Dov Chernevroda was buried in Haifa. He is survived by his three children, Yoav, Adi, and Shaul.
