Sergei Freidin
Oct 4, 2001 - Sergei Freidin, 20, of Afula, was killed when a Palestinian terrorist, dressed as an Israeli paratrooper, opened fire on Israeli civilians waiting at the central bus station in Afula. The terrorist, dressed in IDF military fatigues, opened fire at a crowded bus terminal in Afula at 2:00 P.M., killing three Israelis and wounding 13 others. He entered shops with an M-16 rifle and sprayed them with long bursts of automatic gunfire. Sergei Freidin recently immigrated to Israel with his wife from Russia. They lived in Afula. At the time of the attack, Sergei and his pregnant wife were in the Afula central bus station. They were caught in the line of fire, and Sergei protected his wife - by doing so, he saved her life. She fell on her stomach and was taken to the hospital. Only after doctors affirmed that there was no danger to her life or that of the fetus was she told about her husband's death. Sergei and his wife had been studying Hebrew in an ulpan since arriving in Israel, the fulfillment of a dream. Sergei's parents live in Russia. Sergei Freidin was buried in Afula.
