Shlomo Miller

Aug 13, 2004 - Shlomo Miller, 50, of Itamar in Samaria was killed by a Palestinian terrorist who opened fire outside the settlement gate. The The Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades claimed responsibility.

Yusef Ahmad Hassan Hanany, a member of the operations branch of the Palestinian preventive intelligence service, responsible for preventing terror attacks, opened fire on Friday morning near the rear gate of Itamar. Shlomo Miller, the security coordinator, answered the call for assistance. In the exchange of fire with the terrorist, Miller was mortally injured. The terrorist took the security chief's weapon, and tried to infiltrate the community in order to attack the residents. Civilian security guards arrived at the scene and killed the terrorist. Miller was taken to Beilinson Hospital, where he died of head and chest wounds.

Shlomo Miller originally immigrated to Israel from South Africa, and lived with his family in Jerusalem and the Golan Heights. A resident of Itamar for the last seven years, Shlomo took over as the community's security coordinator after the murder of his predecessor, Yosef Twito, in June 2002. Prior to this he directed various building projects in the area, including the electronic fence around the settlement. He also served on the Itamar governing committee, and was known as a very energetic and dedicated man.

Shlomo Miller was buried on the Mt. of Olives in Jerusalem. He is survived by his wife, Esther, their seven children, aged 4 to 21, and his parents.
