Dec 12, 2002 - Cpl. Keren Ya'akobi, 19, of Hadera was one of two soldiers killed while on guard near the Tomb of the Patriarchs in Hebron. At about 8 P.M. the soldiers from the Sahleb unit of the Military Police were guarding a position near the Tomb of the Patriarchs. Two terrorists opened fire at very close range, leaving them no chance to return fire. Cpl. Keren Ya'akobi was killed instantly; Sgt. Maor Kalfon died shortly afterwards. Keren Ya'akobi was the first female operational fatality since the start of the intifada in September 2000. She was born in Netanya, the eldest of three sisters. Keren was a happy child who knew how to give and receive love. Seven years ago, the family moved to Hadera. Keren completed her high school studies, worked in a cafe and saved money for a trip to Greece and a driving license. Last January, Keren was recruited to the Military Police. She requested a combat role and was assigned to the Sahleb unit stationed in Hebron. Although she was given the option of beginning officers' training, she preferred to remain with the unit for another three to complete her combat training. Cpl. Keren Ya'akobi was buried in Hadera. She is survived by her parents, Yigal and Yaffa, and two younger sisters - Moran (17) and Ma'ayan (12).
