Daphna Spruch

Aug 10, 2002 - Daphna Spruch, 61, of Jerusalem, seriously wounded when a bomb exploded in the Frank Sinatra cafeteria on the Hebrew University Mt. Scopus campus, died of her injuries, bringing the death toll to eight.

Shortly after 13:30, while about 100 people were eating lunch, a bomb exploded in the Frank Sinatra cafeteria on the Hebrew University Mt. Scopus in Jerusalem. The explosive device was apparently planted inside the cafeteria, which was gutted by the explosion. Eight people were killed and 85 were injured. Hamas claimed responsibility for the attack.

Daphna Spruch first came to Hebrew University as a student, and remained as a staff member, most recently as an information systems coordinator for the university's Student Authority. She had gone for lunch with the head of the Student Authority, Levina Shapira, who was killed in the attack. Daphna was seriously wounded in the head, and despite an initial improvement in her condition succumbed to her injuries on August 10.

Daphna's colleagues described her as the brains of the Student Authority and said that her death was a great loss to the university. She was also active in the Women in Black organization, demonstrating against Israeli occupation of the territories.

Daphna Spruch was buried in Jerusalem. She is survived by her husband Yohanan and three children - Asia, Adam and Anna.
