Boris Shamis

July 17, 2002 - Boris Shamis, 25, of Tel-Aviv was one of three people killed in a double suicide bombing on Neve Sha'anan Street near the old central bus station in Tel Aviv.

The two suicide bombers blew themselves up at a distance of 15-20 meters apart on the busy Neve Sha'anan street at 10:10 P.M., an area frequented by many foreign workers. The bombs, which were strapped to the waists of the bombers, he said, contained nails and metal shards. Five people, three of them foreign workers, were killed and about 40 were injured.

Boris Shamis arrived in Israel from Russia seven months to join his parents, Robin and Lydia, who have lived in Israel for four years. A cook by profession, he worked in the dining room of the Israel Electric Company and lived with his parents in a small apartment on Levinsky Street in Tel-Aviv. At the time of the attack, he was sitting with a close friend, Dmitri Pundikov, who was also killed.

His parents were visiting their daughter in Russia when Boris was killed in the blast. His sister remembered him as a "happy, handsome and strong person." "He told me that he is free in Israel," she added.

Boris Shamis was buried in the Yarkon cemetery in Tel-Aviv. He is survived by his parents and sister.
