Shmuel Levy

Nov 1, 2004 - Shmuel Levy, 65, of Jaffa was one of three people were killed in a suicide bombing at the Carmel Market in central Tel Aviv.

Shortly after 11:00 on Monday morning, as the outdoor Carmel Market in central Tel Aviv was filled with shoppers, a 16-year-old suicide bomber, identified as Amar Alfar, 16, from the Askar refugee camp in Nablus, detonated himself. Three people were killed and over 30 wounded. The blast went off at a food stall near the intersection of Rambam and Hacarmel Streets. The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine claimed responsibility for the attack, carried out by a 16-year-old youth from Nablus.

Shmuel Levy immigrated to Israel from Bulgaria 15 years ago. He went to the Carmel Market, where he sometimes shopped, with a friend. Shmuel was killed; his friend was lightly wounded.

Levy, a trained engineer, retired about half a year ago. Prior to his retirement he was employed at an electronics factory in Petah Tikva. His brother-in-law, Yosef Yosefov, said he was a pleasant man who loved the opera, classical music and soccer.

Shmuel Levy was buried in the Yarkon Cemetery. He is survived by his wife Ilda, his daughter Hani, 40, and granddaughter Tali, 23. His son Rafi died in a car accident exactly seven years ago.
