Poll: Hebrew media turns Israelis left (Jpost.com)

Date Posted: Dec 15, 2009

Israelis' political views have been pushed to the left by their country's various Hebrew media sources, according to a new poll.

Nearly 80 percent of the 500 people polled by the Tel Aviv-based Geocartography Knowledge Group believe that Israel's Hebrew media outlets influence their audience, rather than reflect its views, and 53% of those polled said that those outlets support and attempt to advance leftist viewpoints.

Abraham Sion, a law professor and chair of the Center for Law and Mass Media at the Ariel University Center of Samaria, which commissioned the study, believes that when taken together, those two statistics show that the Hebrew media is one of the main factors in forming the Israeli public's general political orientation.

"After all that we've gone through in Israeli society over the past 20 years, how can it be possible that there are many people that still believe that we can achieve peace with the Palestinians?" Sion said.

"There are many people that still believe that Oslo was the right way to go. And that, I think, is a direct result of the nature of the media's coverage of the past 20 years, and of the great deal of influence it has over the general public."

The percentages of Israelis who saw a left-leaning Hebrew media were higher among religious people (73%) and people aged 18-34 (60%).

Hamas and al-Qaeda are the same

Dr. Dore Gold
January 11, 2010 ::: 25, Tevet 5770

The expansion of al-Qaeda-affiliated Jihadi groups in Gaza has diplomatic implications. In the West there is a growing trend to see Hamas and al-Qaeda as separate so as to enable political dialogue with Hamas. Is this view correct?

Leftist smear campaign, again?

Haim Misgav
January 11, 2010 ::: 25, Tevet 5770

It seems that hundreds of thousands of members of the national-Zionist camp are looking at recent events in the political arena with great anxiety. This is so because many of them fear that again we are seeing some intelligence elements, which are hidden from view, making an effort to smear a very large group of citizens. It already happened in the past, when the Shin Bet employed (with the knowledge of top prosecutors) an agent provocateur meant to taint the image of settlers in Judea, Samaria and Gaza. It may be happening now as well.

The decade of defeatism

Sarah Honig
January 3, 2010 ::: 17, Tevet 5770

Strictly in the Israeli context, the first decade of the 21st century deserves to be remembered as the decade of defeatism. The country ushered in the new millennium with an air of resignation. The no-can-do premise and loser mentality still persist, perniciously.

It's essentially a psychological state in which defeat is the foregone conclusion, anticipated as inevitable and accepted without significant resistance. Thus Kadima MK Nahman Shai pontificated in a radio interview that "Israel has no choice but to pay the price Hamas demanded for Gilad Schalit" and if more abductions are thereby engendered, "we'll have to pay then too. That is our lot."

'Uprising’ planned to target ‘West Bank’ Jews

'Uprising’ planned to target ‘West Bank’ Jews
January 3, 2010 ::: 17, Tevet 5770

The Palestinian Authority has decided to support and encourage a "low-level" popular uprising in the strategic West Bank, according to Palestinian and Jordanian intelligence sources.

The decision comes at a time of increased international pressure, including from the Obama administration, for Israeli-Palestinian talks aimed at an eventual Israeli withdrawal from most of the West Bank. The determination also comes as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government has been enforcing a 10-month freeze on Jewish West Bank construction in line with U.S. demands.

TERROR IN USA - PALESTINIANS CELEBRATE!

While hijacked planes crashed into the Twin Towers and thousands were killed, and hundreds of thousands of American lives were destroyed within minutes, Palestinian Arabs came out in multitudes - to celebrate "this great vicotory". Take a look and decide for yourselves: are these people worthy of our support?

Enough with partition!

Ron Breiman
December 27, 2009 ::: 10, Tevet 5770

A few weeks ago, on November 29, the anniversary was marked of the United Nations General Assembly's 1947 decision to partition the western part of the Land of Israel into two states, one Jewish and the other Arab (not Palestinian). The decision was joyously received by the Jewish community here as it came only a short time after the Holocaust. Also, refugees, survivors of the Holocaust, were seeking admission to the country, from which they were being cruelly expelled by the British occupiers.

The guy from Damascus

Smadar Peri (YNET)
December 27, 2009 ::: 10, Tevet 5770

Imagine the following situation: The president of one of the Jewish organizations in the United States insists on vetoing a decision by Israel’s security cabinet. Let’s suppose, for example, that our government ministers convene in order to discuss a super-sensitive matter, but a voice from thousands of kilometers away insists on rejecting the decision, demands modifications, and jeopardizes a vital deal.

The rope could tear

Israel Harel
December 23, 2009 ::: 6, Tevet 5770

One can imagine the uproar that would have ensued if 350 hesder-yeshiva rabbis issued a petition calling on their students to disobey their military commanders' orders, say, for the uprooting from the Gaza Strip. Such a document has never been released, nor will it be, of course. But 350 university "rabbis" have signed a petition calling on soldiers to refuse to serve in the territories. And this was not the only petition.

Israel: A Light unto the Nations

Gerardo Joffe
December 23, 2009 ::: 6, Tevet 5770

If that proverbial man from Mars came to visit and read the world's newspapers, especially those in the Arab and Muslim world, he would be convinced that Israel was the most evil nation in the world and the source of all of the world's strife.

What are the facts?

The Debacle of Demographic Fatalism

Ambassador (ret.) Yoram Ettinger
December 20, 2009 ::: 3, Tevet 5770

Demographobia – the illogical fear of Arab demography – has become a central element shaping Israel's state of mind in general and the attitude toward Judea & Samaria in particular. However, all projections dooming Jews to become a minority between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean have been crashed at the rocks of reality. From a minority of 8% and 33% in 1900 and 1947 respectively, Jews have become a solid majority of 67% west of the Jordan River (without Gaza), benefiting from a demographic tailwind.

Europe Seeks to Divide Jerusalem

Dore Gold
December 20, 2009 ::: 3, Tevet 5770

According to the 1993 Oslo Agreements, Jerusalem is one of the issues to be discussed in future permanent status negotiations. The Swedish move to have the European foreign ministers back a declaration recognizing eastern Jerusalem as the capital of a future Palestinian state clearly pre-judges the outcome of those talks.
